Step into the Living History of Chania
Step into the living history of Chania by exploring its Old City, the most atmospheric and historically rich part of the town, together with the iconic Venetian Harbor. This experience is designed for visitors who want to understand the city, not just see it.
As you move through the picturesque alleys of the Old Town, you will observe architectural elements and monuments shaped by the many civilizations that lived in Chania over the centuries. Archaeological excavation sites reveal remarkable findings, including floor plans of entire ancient establishments, confirming that modern Chania is built on the ruins of the powerful ancient city of Cydonia.
From Ancient Cydonia to Modern Chania
Cydonia was continuously inhabited throughout all historical periods. It experienced prosperity and decline, wars, conquests, and reconstructions. Over time, its name evolved into what we know today as Chania. The city was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, reflecting its strategic importance in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Venetian Harbor, one of the highlights of this tour, was constructed during the Venetian occupation of Crete between 1320 and 1356. It served both as a naval base for military fleets and as one of the most important commercial ports in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Guided Exploration with Audio Guide Support
Historical information about all monuments is provided through an audio guide system, allowing you to fully understand the significance of each site. Your tour leader ensures a smooth and safe route, shares local insights, points out hidden details, and suggests the best photo spots along the way.
Follow the guidelines of your tour leader through the narrow alleys of the Old City and enjoy panoramic views of the Venetian Harbor. Discover secret paths, lesser-known corners, and monuments that define the historical identity of Chania.
Splantzia & the Eastern Side of the Old City
The tour continues to Splantzia, the former Turkish district of Chania and once the central gathering area of the Ottoman population. You will then reach the exterior of the eastern Venetian walls and the area of Koum Kapi.
Historically, Koum Kapi was a settlement where poor North African slaves lived and was known in Turkish as Kum Kapisi (“Gate of the Sand”), named after the Venetian gate that still survives today. In modern times, Koum Kapi has evolved into a lively seaside district, attracting thousands of visitors every summer with its sea views, cafés, and restaurants.
