At the heart of the tour lies the Old City of Chania and its exceptional Venetian Harbor. As you ride through historic neighborhoods and scenic coastal routes, you will observe architectural elements shaped by the many civilizations that lived here over the centuries. The tour reveals how modern Chania developed on the site of the ancient city of Cydonia, a city that flourished, declined, and was rebuilt many times after wars, invasions, and conquests. Over time, its name evolved into what we know today as Chania.

The Venetian Legacy and Modern Insight

The Venetian Harbor, constructed between 1320 and 1356, was built during the Venetian rule of Crete and became a key naval and commercial center of the Eastern Mediterranean. Its fortifications, shipyards, and landmarks still define the city’s waterfront today.

Historical information about monuments and locations is provided through a multilingual audio guide system, while your tour leader offers additional local insight, practical tips, and assistance throughout the ride. Plenty of photo opportunities are included along the route.

This extended route allows you to experience both the historic core and the coastal districts of Chania:

• Chania Old City – traditional narrow alleys, historic neighborhoods, and everyday local life
• Venetian Harbor – The crown jewel of Chania. Scenic waterfront views with classic architecture, fortifications, and iconic landmarks
• Nea Chora – Beachside section, with a small harbor and waterfront tavernas.
• Kum Kapi – outside the eastern Venetian walls, Kum Kapi is a lively seaside district, where visitors gather to enjoy the sea view, cafés, and restaurants, while its preserved Venetian gate remains a reminder of the area’s past.
• Splantzia Quarter – The most authentic neighborhood where the Christian and Ottoman histories meet. A “must-see” for history buffs.
• Ancient Kydonia – See the archaeological excavations of one of the oldest cities in Europe.
